About the Artist
When painting, I feel I must commit a piece of my soul to each image. To me, words are an insufficient way to express feelings, so I try to enable my hands to reach inside myself to pull emotions from deep within. I then inject these into my canvas in the hope that I can communicate authentically with others in a way that allows them to experience the same feelings.
I’m fascinated by the dynamic movement of the natural world and try to expose the elemental forces that are at play. Interestingly, as well as defining the subject, these forces impact the surroundings and transform the mood of the viewer in the process. I believe the different manner in which light and colour is perceived also merits perpetual investigation and is vital to creating mood and atmosphere, so I continue to experiment with this.
I consciously try not to limit my art to a particular style, as I’m obsessed with exploring new methods and techniques. I believe each subject deserves an individual approach and keeping an open mind will reveal the most appropriate style to capture the essence of the image, in an attempt to communicate the idea that always seems so clear inside my head….! This could be a feeling, movement, desire, attitude or atmosphere.
In my portraiture, I strive to reveal the personality of the sitter in a way that positively reflects their own ego and self-image and that will be familiar to people who know them well. Where appropriate, I sometimes add objects or mementos from their life, in order to convey aspects of their psyche that may otherwise go unnoticed.
I’m always working to improve my technique and achieving a sense of heightened reality is something that truly moves me. My aim it to create powerful compositions by contrasting light and shade, form and movement and to illustrate how subjects can come to life and leave everything behind.
